Humane Society: A Producer Success Story
When community producer Bob Parker attended the grand opening of CCTV's new facility at 575 Trade Street last December, he didn't know it would lead to another successful project.
At the opening, Bob caught up with Susan Carey, director of the Willamette Humane Society, and talked to her about what CCTV does. Something clicked: Susan was very interested in how the Humane Society could be involved and potentially have a program. That show is now playing on CCTV channel 23.
The purpose of the program, Bob said, is "to show adoptable pets. I was thinking dogs, but they have cats, rats, guinea pigs, all kinds of things."
The next step was to put the word out to the Humane Society staff and volunteers. "They have a lot of volunteers over there; some people are camera shy, so we've got a small core of people who show the pets, and a larger core of people who recommend" pets for the show.
Bob and Susan also found volunteers to take over production of the program itself. Two Humane Society volunteers took CCTV's camera and editing classes and worked directly with Bob to get a feel for how the show is produced. "They get in there and they sort of take turns so they're both familiar with all the steps," said Bob.
"I thought it was a good opportunity," said Gowri Karnum (right), one of the volunteers working on the show. "I think Intro to Editing is a great class for anyone who has no idea what to do. It's great footing for somebody who wants to get a project off the ground." Richard Wassarman is also working on the show. They shoot every Monday, then take turns editing on Tuesday, finishing each show after just one day of editing.
"We all feel really good about doing everything we can." said Bob.
We asked Bob if he had any advice for new producers who might be thinking about getting started making their own program for CCTV. "Find something you care about, and get on your soapbox. Figure out how to get the word out."
