For the Love of Literacy: Unlocking the Door to Learning

2010 Reading for All Conference

Valentine’s weekend this year involved more than hearts and romance in Salem. At the Red Lion Inn there was a two-day conference focusing on literacy and issues surrounding it. The conference was well attended with over 500 participants over the two-day period. Both Friday and Saturday were jam-packed with work sessions on topics like understanding poverty (in relation to literacy), attention in young children and brain development, nutrition and the brain, the importance of oral language development in Spanish speaking children and sign language for early childhood literacy. Also, at the beginning of each day and during the lunch hour, various experts and community leaders gave keynote addresses. The Statesman Journal’s executive editor, Bill Church, gave one such keynote on raising a community through literacy

Watch sessions from this important and interesting conference on CCTV. We will be showing various presentations from the conference for several weeks to come.
